each month, a different type of light

One lamp, each month.
Each month I am going to  make a lamp that echoes the seasonal changes around me. I'm always aware of how the sun moves around the world, constantly aware of the different seasons back in Aotearoa compared to Kernow. It's made me think a lot about light, seasons, and the wheel of the year. Expect a new lamp to be uploaded here, each month until May 2025.

LAMP #1

Daffodil, the lamp of May.

I started making this lamp while our garden and the surrounding landscape was filled with Daffodils. The Tamar Valley used to be a major source of the early blooms for the rest of the United Kingdom, and as we live in an old farming landscape, many, many varieties of Narcissus some, down the road at Cotehele are 17th C varieties.

LAMP #2

Wading through yellow reeds , the lamp of June.

This lamp was being made as the reeds outside our Tamar River home were turning a perfect golden, then brown, then mid way though the month they gave way to new green shoots. It all happened so quickly. The base has a wobbly shape that I wanted to echo the root of the Reed as it moved through its yearly cycle under the layers of mud in the River.

LAMP #3

Capricorn Teahouse, the lamp of July.

This lamp is a study in architectural lighting. I’m really interested in making work that speaks to a space you are living within. I’m also intrigued about the idea that light can mean many things. I have a burgeoning interest in the practice of Zen, and came across the idea of ‘The temptation of capturing what is meant to be ephemeral’. I really resonated with this idea and through this new work have tried to capture what a night sky might look if contained inside a building. Here is the result. Its name comes from the most recent full moon that beamed directly into my bedroom this month, and from the Japanese Teahouse, as its shape reminds me of the clear, simple architecture of these special buildings.

LAMP #4

 Talland the lamp of August.

Named after a favourite beach in Cornwall, August makes me think of swimming. Here is my latest lamp, my own wee island.

A rock pool. a lazy river, a series of stones washed ashore. A tidal island seperated by a stretch of sea, once the home for someone seeking solace, now a forgotten rocky nest for sea birds. Something like Iona, Lindisfarne, Inishmore, Hy-Brasil, Aaran, Angelsey, St Michael’s, Scilly.
